Plain text, on your Mac, without the fuss
NeatEdit is a small, native text editor. It opens a short note or a huge log just as readily, keeps your unsaved tabs when you quit, and leaves your file exactly as it found it.
Free and open source. Requires macOS 14 or later. Notarized by Apple. Coming soon to the Mac App Store.

Nothing to lose
Tabs you never saved are still there after you quit. Quitting never stops to ask about saving, and files reopen where you left them.
Your file stays yours
Encoding, byte order mark and line endings are written back as they were. Paste always arrives as plain text, right at the caret.
Nothing leaves your Mac
No account, no analytics, no network code at all. It's open source, so you can check that yourself.

Big logs open instantly
Files over 20 MB open in a read-only viewer that stays quick at hundreds of megabytes. Find, copy and jump to any line.
It follows a growing file like tail -f: at the bottom, new lines keep arriving; scroll up, and the view stays put.
Fix one line of a huge file
Right-click a line and choose Edit Lines. You get that line and ten either side, numbered as in the file. Save writes them straight in, and only if those lines on disk are still the ones you opened.

Colour when it helps
Basic syntax highlighting, picked from the file's name. The colours never touch your text, your undo history or a printout.
JSON, Markdown, PHP, JavaScript and TypeScript, Python, HTML and XML, CSS, Shell, YAML, SQL, Swift, C, C++, Java, C# and Go.
Speaks your language
NeatEdit follows your Mac's language, in all 24 official EU languages and Ukrainian.
